Dugat-Py is a estate located in Gevrey-Chambertin in the heart of the great terroirs of Burgundy. The Dugat family have been winegrowers in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation since the beginning of the 17th century. Bernard Dugat and his son, Loîc are the 12th and 13th generation to exploit the unique knowledge of wine-making and working in the vines, which has been acquired over four centuries. The particularity of Dugat-Py is its vines some of them classified as « Très Vieilles Vignes », 65 years old on average. The domaine was founded in 1923, founded by Fernand Dugat and his bride Jeanne Bolnot, the first great satisfaction will come in 1972. Their Charmes-Chambertin won the prize for the best red Grand Cru in the 1972 vintage. In 1979 Bernard married Jocelyn Py but it wasn’t until 1994 that the name of the domaine changed to Domaine Dugat-Py. Loïc joined his parents from 1996 and it was he that made his first trials with organic viticulture in 1999, the whole domaine moving to organic principles in 2003. In the old part of the village, at the foot of the Combe de Lavaux, can be found the buildings of the Aumônerie -a kind of small abbey, which from the 9th Century belonged to the St Benigne Abbey in Dijon. Very little remains of these buildings, apart from the cellars, which were built in the 11th and 12th centuries, under directions from Aumônier (Abbot) Halinard. Continuing a nine hundred year tradition, Dugat-Py wines are aged from 18 to 24 months in these magnificent vaulted cellars

The Dugat-Py style harkens to the type of wines made in Burgundy in the 1960’s and before. These are wines built for the long haul. As much as possible Bernard leaves the wine alone to make itself, uses only naturally occurring yeast and includes the use of stems during fermentation to soften the tannins. The Chambertin is an exciting and very rare wine – a somewhat surprising wine whose terroir permits the Dugat-Py style to attain a new level. “The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru bursts from the glass with a characteristically exuberant bouquet of cherries and licorice, complemented by hints of peonies and warm spices. On the palate, it's full-bodied, supple and vibrant, its powdery structuring tannins concealed in an ample core of strikingly succulent, lively fruit. This Charmes-Chambertin's evident freshness is a vindication of Loïc Dugat-Py's decision to harvest early—and, just as importantly, his punctilious viticulture. Vinified with 60% whole cluster, this is another cuvée that saw entirely new barrels in previous vintages but was matured in only 66% new oak this year” Robert Parker.
