It rarely happens that the origins of a wine can be traced back to one single man. Brunello di Montalcino, however, owes its existence to the inventiveness of Celemente Santi and his nephew Ferruccio Biondi Santi who, in the 1900s, began to vinify pure Sangiovese Grosso in Montalcino.

Since 1888, the first vintage of Brunello in history, Biondi-Santi continued to produce wines renowned for their elegance and extraordinary longevity. No Compromise. Careful attention to details and excellent craftsmanship accompany Biondi Santi's Brunello which is produced with hand selected grapes from the estate's vineyards. In the winery it is fermented in cement vats with the use of indigenous yeasts and ages in large Slavonian oak casks, according to tradition

The 2001 vintage: weather conditions at Tenuta Greppo, January, February, March, April and May were cold and rainy; June, July and August were dry and hot. At the beginning of September the grapes were already ripe. The harvest began in the second half of the month and the course was dry and cool. The Riserva 2001 was produced with the Sangiovese Grosso BBS11 clone (Brunello Biondi Santi 11), identified and selected by Biondi-Santi at Tenuta Greppo in the seventies. For this Riserva have been used grapes coming exclusively from the oldest vineyards with more than 25 years of age


Riserva 2001 was aged in Slavonian oak casks for 3 years.

It could benefit of a very long aging in bottle in the quiet and dark of "La Storica", the aging cellar of Tenuta Greppo, where all the historical vintages of Biondi-Santi's Reserve are scrupulously kept.
