With its 7.53 hectares, Clos de Tart is the largest of the five Grands Crus Monopoles in Burgundy. The Grand Cru appellation applies to terroirs with an excellent reputation that can produce the very best wines. There are only 33 of these appellations in Burgundy and their production taken together represents only 1% of total regional production. The reference to 'Monopole' indicates that the climat is entirely in sole ownership. This is quite rare in Burgundy as the plots, even the very small ones, have frequently been divided up over time and for inheritance reasons. Custodian of a rich and fascinating history spanning nine centuries, Clos de Tart's vineyard has never been divided, which is a very rare occurrence in Burgundy. Climat(s) "are precisely delineated plots of land that enjoy specific geological and climatic conditions. When combined with human effort and translated through the two great Bourgogne varietals of Pinot Noir for reds and Chardonnay for whites, they give rise to an exceptional range of appellations that are classified according to quality and which enjoy international renown." A unique treasure, the Estate has only had four owners throughout its history: The Cistercian nuns of Tart Abbey from 1141 to 1791; The Marey-Monge Family from 1791 to 1932; The Mommessin Family from 1932 to 2018; The Pinault Family via their holding company, Artémis Domaines, since April 2018

For more than 650 years (1141 to 1789), Cistercian nuns, known as the "Tart Ladies" or "Tart Cistercians" brought a monastic way of life to the Estate, the spirit of which still endures today. The geographical location of Clos de Tart, right in the centre of the village and not far from the famous Clos de Vougeot, shows the extent to which, throughout the centuries, the Estate was an integral part of medieval monastic viticulture. As the Estate has only had four proprietors in its history, a feeling of permanence has arisen from this continuity of ownership. It is a setting of utmost serenity where vineyard workers masterly perform age-old techniques with great precision under the benevolent gaze of the Tart Virgin (the emblematic statuette from the Fourteenth Century who watches over the Estate). Situated in the heart of the Côte de Nuits in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, Clos de Tart's vineyard is unique thanks to its diverse terroir. The Estate is completely surrounded by a dry-stone wall, giving the Estate its name, as 'Clos' means 'walled vineyard'. This historic structure totals 1.2 km in length and is traditionally-Burgundian in origin. The riches of this climat are quite extraordinary, as indeed is the slope of the vineyard. Interestingly, the vines are planted with a North/South exposure, which is not commonly practiced on the hillsides of the Côte-d'Or. In recent years, in-depth studies have been carried out to better understand the nature of each sub-plot that makes up the mosaic of soils and subsoils at Clos de Tart. Thanks to these efforts, today we are able to faithfully transcribe how these twelve different subplots complement one another and offer the purest expression of precious Pinot Noir vines. You can know the wide variety of terroirs of Clos de Tart and better understand the subtleties and complementary features of the subplots that make up the final blend of this Grand Cru Monopole. Clos de Tart expresses the very essence of the old vines on the estate, most of which are around 60 years old on average

Vintage 2018 Tasting Notes: lovely deep colour with a complex nose of generous red berries, poached plum, cherries and some dark fruits after aeration, as well as floral notes of rose and violet.  On the palate this wine shows it is from a warm vintage as is powerful, intense and fleshy, whilst remaining incredibly elegant with soft and silky tannins.
